Chicken Fried Rice

Yes, we made it, and no it wasnt from a street Chinese vendor.

1. Buy chicken. This is most important. You have to be discreet. Your Jain neighbors can't find out. If they do, good luck. No heaven for you. No Nirvana, no rebirth. You're going straight to hell. So, go at night, when it's dark. Make it look like you're perusing the spices, books, pre-made kurtas. Then eye the eggwalla. Make sure he makes eye contact with you too. Give him a nod. And not the Indian head bob. Rather, "you know what I want" slight-upwards-move-of-the-head nod. He'll know you want more than just eggs. Make sure the chicken is in a black bag. Retreat home, with a confident stride.
2. cut and clean chicken.
3. cook chicken.
4. cut veggies.
5. fry veggies.
6. make rice.
7. put oil in rice.
8. put rice in frying pan. fry rice.
9. mix all together.
10. prepare for salivary satisfaction.

India, 3 Months in: Let's Discuss

Hi everyone,

Andrew here. Let's discuss a few things. I welcome your comments:

1. The squat: For those of you who have the privilege of using squat toilets on a daily basis, have you also discovered that you prefer squat to Western? On a recent train ride, I attempted to use a Western and felt terribly out of place. It felt awkward, not right. I longed for the squatter. I think the reasons for this are obvious. It has to do with a certain physiological effect that I wont elaborate on, but basically, your sheisses are better in the squat position. Disclaimer: once a squat passes 5-6 minutes in length, it becomes harder to prove my point.

2. Staring Contests: In the backwaters of Bihar, I discovered, to my great pleasure, that people stared at me less! For those of you who have made, or regularly make, trips to very rural areas, where, by chance, there is little technology, mostly bicycles (over cars and motos), and dirt roads galore, do you find that the people stare at you less? It is the opposite of what logic should dictate... that the village people, having seen less white people, should stare more, but I feel instead that the village people, caring less about YOU, and more about their daily labors, are simply less interested.

3. (1) Indian meal a day: After my recent travels , I came to realize that I can tolerate exactly (1) one Indian meal per day, no more no less. An "Indian" meal I would define as sabji, roti, chawal, and daal. My daily lunch tiffin is looked forward to, and relished, on a 6 times a week basis. But I supplement this with American cereal and milk, or eggs and toast por las mananas, and a significantly-less-than-Indian-oil-amount stir fry or pasta por las noches. Complemented with lots of fruit for snacks, this combination has sustained me well. I found to my displeasure in the last two weeks that 2-3 Indian meals a day both ruined my appetite for the food, and derailed my (beautiful) bowel movement processes that had been going (strongly) for weeks...

I welcome your feedback!

Andrew

Welcome!

Dear Sirs and Madams of the Fellowship,

The idea of a WPF blog was floated during orientation, but has thus far remained unrealized (largely due to me and my internet connection's combined flakiness - sorry!). In homage to Republic Day, let us inaugurate a new era for our WPF experience -- one of emotional and interweb unity. Please post thoughts, comments, clips, articles, photos, videos, recipes, movies, stories, or anything else that you are capable of uploading. Vive l'India! Vive le Blog!
